Don't forget the happy ending!

Whatever your romance novel is about and whatever the names and misunderstandings of your protagonists, one thing is clear from the outset: Your story needs to have a happy ending.

So think about this when you pass a bridal shop or see the picture of a beautiful wedding dress, or even a bride on her wedding day. Without a happy ever after, your romance novel isn't a romance novel. It may be a drama with love as the central theme; it may be an action story or a historical with love, but a proper romance novel it isn't.

Give your two main characters the chance they deserve: their own special happy ending!

Happy writing!

Creative Writing Prompt 55: Eggspiration awaits

Look at the inspirational picture and find plenty of story ideas for your creative writing!

What an impressive eggshell tower, but who used all these eggs, and why? Ideas that spring to mind range from protein crazy hunks like the famous Gaston in "Beauty and the Beast" to the London chef, who needs to cook an omelette for fussy Hercule Poirot. A girl putting masses of egg yolk in her hair, so that it is soft and shiny for the upcoming rendezvous with Mr Right, or a hopeful future widow trying to get her deadly eggnog mixture just right.

Maybe you see something rather symbolic in this picture. Each individual eggshell so fragile, but stacked together, they form a strong structure - unless there's a rotten egg somewhere in between. Now that's a great idea for a story...

Creative Writing Prompt 54: Forget me not

Look at the inspirational picture and find plenty of story ideas for your creative writing!

Have you ever wondered why this lovely blue flower ended up with the romantic name of forget-me-not? We searched on Wikipedia, and here's the answer (quote):

"Legend has it that in medieval times, a knight and his lady were walking along the side of a river. He picked a posy of flowers, but because of the weight of his armour he fell into the river. As he was drowning he threw the posy to his loved one and shouted, "Forget-me-not."

Surely this little story will give you great ideas for your writing, from "Why on earth did he show up on a date in full armour?" to "I wonder how long it took until she kissed the next knight?"

What comes to mind when you look at this broken piano? Do you see it from the viewpoint of an angry neighbour who is annoyed about the old rubbish in the garden next door? Or do you visualise the piano in its former glory and beautiful music filling the air?

Maybe a couple used to sit there and play together, their fingers touching, their tune a promise of love. Are they still alive and has their love lasted, or is it broken like the piano?

Creative Writing Prompt 51: April Fools' Day

1st April is the day where we traditionally trick each other with the help of harmless lies or pranks. Even newspapers often follow the trend and print something that's obviously not true ("UFO has landed next to the White House"). If you believe the story, you're a true April Fool.

So what about writing about someone who believes what he heard or read on April Fools' Day? Maybe his whole life changes because of his mistake - he might even end up a millionaire!

What if the story were true but everyone thinks it must be a prank - can he save the world?

Has she lost her way? Has she overdressed to impress her man? Was she kicked out of the car after an argument?

Grammar: Lay or Lie?

'Lay' and 'lie' often get confused, especially in the past tense. So here is how to use them correctly:

1. 'Lay' always needs an object that is being laid somewhere. For example, 'I lay the book on the table.' The book is the object because this is what is being laid on the table.

In the past tense, 'lay' changes to 'laid'. For example, 'When John came home, I laid the book on the table and went to greet him.'

2. 'Lie' never has an object, because the subject itself lies somewhere. For example, 'The book lies on the table.'

In the past tense, 'lie' changes to 'lay'. For example, 'When John came home, Mary lay on the sofa.'

Creative Writing Prompt 49: The Ides Of March

Look at the inspirational picture and find plenty of story ideas for your creative writing!

Today, 2060 years ago, on the Ides of March (15 March), Julius Caesar was assassinated. He was very surprised to find that Brutus was part of those who assassinated him, a friend he loved like his own son.

This betrayal alone can provide plenty of inspiration for a great story. How would you feel if a trusted friend suddenly stabbed his knife between your ribs?

What if Julius Caesar hadn't been killed that day? How would history have changed?

What if his spirit lived on in his statue in Rome; if he could see and hear everything but not move or speak? How does he feel, being condemned to stand on his pedestal in eternal silence?

Do you already feel hypnotized by her mesmerizing eyes?

Is your story about Bertram, the mouse, who finds himself totally attracted to the cat he's often admired from afar? He knows his mother told him not to get too close to a cat, but surely this one must be an exception...

Look at the inspirational picture and find plenty of story ideas for your creative writing!

A few sunbeams amidst the clouds, something sparkles, and then you see it...a golden pocket watch on the pavement! How did it get here? What's the story behind it?

Maybe there was a struggle between a mugger and an elderly gentleman, and that's how it fell on the floor.

Is your heroine crying her eyes out because she has lost the pocket watch?

Is it a magic pocket watch that turns back time, depending on how far back you turn the dials?

Grammar: 'You and I' or 'You and Me'?

Bad grammar is a bad idea. Confusing ‘you and I’ and ‘you and me’ is a common mistake. To make sure that you’ve got it right, just leave out the other person to see whether your sentence still works.

‘You and me drove to the airport’. Minus ‘You’, the sentence reads, ‘Me drove to the airport.’ This doesn’t work, so the correct sentence must be ‘You and I went to the airport.’

‘The king and I went to the ball.’ Minus the king, the sentence reads, ‘I went to the ball’ – perfectly correct, so in this case, ‘The king and I’ is the correct way to say it.

‘Mrs Baker met him and I on the way to church.’ Minus ‘him’, the sentence reads, ‘Mrs Baker met I on the way to church.’ This doesn’t work, so the correct sentence must be ‘Mrs Baker met him and me on the way to church.’

“The puppy was a present for her and me.’ Minus ‘her’, the sentence reads, ‘The puppy was a present for me.’ This sentence is correct, so ‘The puppy was a present for her and me’ must also be correct.

Thinking about ballet, maybe your heroine is the prima ballerina, who's just found out that she's pregnant. What now, if she doesn't want to lose her job? Or, while Don Q and his girl keep twirling on stage, your protagonist's knee daringly touches the knee of his love interest. Might they even kiss tonight?

Maybe your hero has to save the day because there's a dangerous killer somewhere inside the fully booked opera house - and the Queen sits peacefully on the Royal balcony, suspecting no evil...

Also a character like Aldonza is truly inspiring because, although she's just a plain girl, she turns into beautiful Dulcinea in the eyes of the man who loves her. Does she realise that he only loves a dreamed-up version of herself?
